Learn how to choose the right NVR storage capacity for your security system, with practical decision rules and trade-offs for 1TB, 2TB, and 12TB HDD options.
Quick Answer
Choose NVR storage based on camera count, resolution, and how many days of footage you need to keep. For most homes, a 1TB or 2TB HDD works; for 16-camera 4K systems, a 12TB HDD provides the longest retention.
Why Storage Capacity Matters
The hard drive inside your NVR determines how much video you can keep before it starts overwriting older footage. Higher resolution and more cameras consume storage faster, so matching capacity to your setup prevents losing important clips too soon.
Trade-Offs of Larger HDDs
A larger hard drive costs more upfront but extends recording time and reduces the need for frequent maintenance. Smaller drives are budget-friendly but may only retain a few days of footage, especially with 4K cameras.
Decision Rules for NVR Storage
- Camera Count: Count the number of cameras you plan to connect. More cameras mean more data, so choose a larger HDD for 8+ cameras. List your camera count before comparing storage sizes.
- Resolution: 4K video uses significantly more storage than 1080p. If you record in 4K, plan for at least double the storage per camera. Check your camera's resolution and adjust your estimate.
- Retention Days: Decide how many days of footage you need to keep. For 7 days with 4K cameras, a 2TB HDD suits up to 6 cameras; a 12TB HDD supports 16 cameras for longer. Set a retention goal and work backward to capacity.
